What We Believe

Statement of faith

WE BELIEVE in one true God, Jehovah, who revealed Himself as the “I AM”, the creator of the heavens and the earth, the sea and springs of water (Gen. 1: 1, Is. 54: 5 & Rev. 14: 7).

WE BELIEVE that Jesus is Lord and Christ. We believe that He is the Son of God who carries away the sin of the world, and that there is no salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we may be saved (Luke 2: 1011; Acts 2: 36; 4: 12 &10: 28).

WE BELIEVE that those who believe and are baptised will be saved. This baptism is conducted through immersion of the believer in water. Through baptism we confess our faith in the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and bear witness to our death to sin. Baptism is a symbol of our identity or unity with Christ (Rom. 6:1-6; Col. 2: 12, 13; Acts 16: 30-33; 22:16; 2:38; Matt. 28:19, 20).

WE BELIEVE in the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking with the tongues of angels (I Cor. 13: 1), as the Spirit gives utterance. Jesus Christ is the One who baptises us with the Holy Spirit and fire. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit we have power to be Jesus’ witnesses in Venda, South Africa, Africa, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1: 8 3: 11 & 2: 4).

WE BELIEVE in the law of God Jehovah and also the law of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do not believe in Moses’ law. Christ’s law replaced Moses’ law when Jesus was crucified on the cross (Deut. 20: 1-17; Deut. 31: 9-12, 25; Matt. 5: 43-45; 22: 36; Mark 12: 28-31). If one loves God Jehovah with all of one’s heart, soul and strength then one will receive wisdom from Him only and not from any other gods.

WE BELIEVE that all Scripture (the Bible), both the Old and New Testaments, is given through inspiration from God Jehovah, and it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, and to equip us thoroughly for good works (II Tim. 3: 16-17).

WE BELIEVE that sin entered the world through Adam. Anybody born after him was born in sin. We are redeemed by His grace through the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish and without spot. We overcome the devil and his demons through this precious blood of our Lord and, of course, the word of our testimony (I Peter 1: 19 & Rev. 12: 11; Rom. 3: 23-24).

WE BELIEVE in the Lamb’s Book of Life and that the only way for one’s name to be registered in this Book is by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and personal saviour (Heb. 12: 23; Rev. 13: 8 & 20: 12).

WE BELIEVE that God Jehovah, being a Spirit, has created man in His own image and therefore that man is a spirit being, living inside the body and having a soul. If man is to enter the kingdom of God Jehovah, man’s whole being, spirit, soul and body must be kept blameless until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (Gen. 1: 26-27; Gen. 2. 7: John 4: 24; I Thes. 5: 23).

WE BELIEVE in the ministry of divine healing and deliverance, that is the laying on of hands on the sick; anointing the sick with oil and in casting out demons (Mark 16: 17-18; Acts 5: 16; Acts 7: 35; James 5: 14). All these miracles are performed by those who are in Christ Jesus, in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

WE BELIEVE in miracles, holy miracles which come from God Jehovah, the Creator of the Heavens, the earth and the oceans. Miracles or “signs and wonders” occur now and then as God Jehovah wills, not at scheduled times. Miracles occur when there is supernatural intervention by the power of God Jehovah through Jesus’ name and His Spirit in our lives and situations (Acts 5: 12; 6: 8).

WE BELIEVE that those who regard the blood of Jesus Christ as common and whose hearts are therefore hardened through the deceitfulness of sin (Heb. 3: 13) will “go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched” (Mark 9: 43-48). One can avoid hell by registering one’s name in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

WE BELIEVE in proclaiming the Lord’s death till He comes to us through the Lord’s Supper. The bread represents Jesus’ body which was broken for us and the wine is the new covenant in His blood. We eat the bread and drink the wine in remembrance of Him. Preparation for the Supper includes self-examination, repentance, and confession (I Cor. 11: 23-29).

WE BELIEVE in the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (Heb. 9: 28) and that He will come as a thief – at an hour we do not expect. That day and hour no one knows, but the Father only (Matt. 24: 36, 44 & 25: 13 & Rev. 3: 11 & 16:15).

WE BELIEVE in God Jehovah’s rest. God Jehovah blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all the work which He had performed. A promise remains of entering His rest. We therefore believe in fellowshipping with God Jehovah and with one another on the Sabbath, that is the seventh day (Gen. 2: 1-4; Deut. 5: 12-14 & Heb. 4: 1-11).

WE BELIVE in the five-fold ministry, i.e. that our Lord Jesus Christ gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (Eph. 4: 11-12).

WE BELIVE that the activities of the Church of God Jehovah and its varied ministries are to be financed by the tithes of our members and the offerings of both our members and all those who believe in the vision given to us by the Lord our God (Matt. 23:23; I Cor. 16:1; II Cor. 9:6-7).
